Required Questions 1.Tools are a major focus in this class. Though many things can be completed by hand tools are often necessary. In creating artwork what type of tools have you used? In using these tools how did they help your work along? Explain their function and purpose. (Ex. Pottery Wheel, aviation snips, Clay rib) A pottery wheel is used to make clay pieces such as cups, pots, plates, and vases. Aviation snips are used to cut metal in tricky shapes and sizes. A clay rib can be metal or wooden, and they are used to help you shape your clay and ensure a smooth surface on your piece. 2.How has your knowledge and understanding of tools changed since the beginning of the semester? Talk about your growth of understanding. Over the time that I joined sculpture, I had no prior knowledge to sculpture and tools. Since then I have learned the names and uses of various sculpting and clay tools that have helped me to make some very amazing pieces of art. A prime example of a tool that has helped me was the clay rib, because it helps me smooth out my clay to create a great texture once glaze and paints are applied to the piece. Pick Three Which project was your most successful? Describe the theme and or topic and the process you went through to complete the project. I think that my sgraffito piece was my best. I say this because I enjoyed making the design on this piece, and I liked the way it looked when I had finished making it. To create the Sgraffito tray, I rolled a slab of clay, cut it to size, and then I used a styrofoam tray with plastic wrap. I then placed the clay down and shaped it to the form of the tray. Next, I cut off the excess clay on the sides and corners. Then, I applied 3 layers of a gloss black undercoat. After the glaze was dry, I used a needle tool to create my pattern. Once I finished that, I put the piece in the kiln, and applied a layer of red acrylic paint to the bottom of the piece once it was fired and had cooled. Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or developed the most from? Please explain. I think I grew the most from the paper mâché monkey heads. I think that I learned so much from these because creating life forms in a sculpture helped me out a lot with knowing how different materials move and behave when you apply different movements and techniques to them. What is your least favorite material to work with and why? How did you deal with it, what didn’t you like about it. Please explain. My least favorite material to work with is paper mâché because it is a very messy medium. It requires alot of attention and patience, and paper mâché may not always turn out the way you intend it to. With experience, making paper mâché is considered an easy task. However, as a beginner, I find it a very time consuming, and difficult art material to work with. To deal with the struggles of paper mâché, I think taking time to make sure that I used the right amount of flour in the mixture and the right sized paper strips will help to ensure a better final product of a paper mâché piece. Monkey Head #004Group: Imane, Nate, Nicole,
My Contribution: I helped make the monkey head with the idea of the eye patch. I also helped make the initial shape of the head. Starting out, we made a mixture of water and flour, and used newspaper strips along the outside of a plastic ball. After it dried, we added another layer and made a hump for the nose, mouth, and ears. Next, we added the eye patch made of cardboard to the left eye and we finished the head off with brown paint and a silver paint for the eye patch and it’s strap... when we were done with that, we popped the plastic ball and removed the plastic from the inside or the head. Graziano Locatelli
Graziano Locatelli displays his pieces and lives in Milan and London. Locatelli is an artist who uses different materials, mainly tiles, metal plates, and cement in his work. In his pieces, he explains his "art of breakage" as a reflection of his childhood. He says that the events in his past inspire him to make art. Graziano Locatelli's art is inspiring to me because he makes his art based of of the things he has seen in his life, and chose to turn them into positive and realistic artwork.
Sgraffito This type of vase is called a Psykter. Psykters have a long history in greek and ancient culture due to their use. Many people decorated them with pictures that told stories about greek gods and goddesses. Pottery like the one shown was used to store and transport wine and other liquids. We worked on construction paper to recreate the Disney cartoon "Lava". Sgraffito is Italian for " to scratch" A Register is a horizontal line or scratch that consists in several levels. |
